| 摘要 | 본 연구의 목적은 『대승기신론』의 물과 바람과 파도의 비유의 관련 용례를 검토하고 그 특징을 살펴보는 것이다. 『기신론』의 물과 바람과 파도의 비유는 『능가경』에서 온 것으로 여겨져 왔으나, 다른 문헌에서의 활용 양상은 검토되지 않았다. 이에 본 연구는 슬라이스 유사도 분석을 활용하여 『기신론』 이전 문헌들에서 물과 바람과 파도의 비유가 사용된 사례를 찾고, 나타나는 양상을 몇 가지로 정리한 뒤, 이를 『기신론』의 비유와 비교하였다.
연구 과정은 다음과 같다. 우선, 본 연구에서는 CBETA에 수록된 2000여 권에 달하는 전산화된 한문 불전을 대상으로, 슬라이스 유사도 분석을 활용하여 물, 바람, 파도의 비유를 검출하였다. 그다음으로 검출된 내용들을 용도에 따라 자연 묘사, 심리 현상에 대한 비유, 그리고 철학적 논변의 요소로 사용하는 것으로 정리하여 특징을 살펴보았다. 마지막으로, 『기신론』의 물과 바람과 파도의 비유를 앞선 비유들과 비교하여, 『기신론』의 비유는 『대지도론』, 『능가경』과 같이 마음의 불변하는 성질을 긍정하는 시각에서 사용되었으나 논의 전개상으로는 『열반경』과 공유하는 요소가 있다는 것을 보였다.
본 연구의 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대규모 한문 불전에 규칙 기반의 전산언어학적 도구인 슬라이스 유사도 분석을 적용하여 연구자료를 검출할 수 있다는 것을 실증하였다. 둘째, 『기신론』 이전에 사용되었던 물과 바람과 파도의 비유들이 심리 묘사에서 두 가지 유형으로 달리 나타난다는 것을 발견하였다. 셋째, 『기신론』의 비유를 다른 문헌들의 용례와 유사성을 비교하여, 『기신론』이 『열반경』 등의 『능가경』 이전의 문헌과 관련될 수 있다는 가능성을 제시하였다.
This study examines the uses and characteristics of the water, wind, and waves metaphor in the Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna (AFM). Traditionally, this metaphor has been considered to originate from the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, but its appearances in other texts have not been systematically investigated. To address this gap, the study employs slice similarity analysis to identify occurrences of the metaphor, organize them into recurring patterns in texts predating AFM, and compare these with its usage in AFM.
The research corpus consists of 2,000 digitized volumes from the CBETA collection. Within this corpus, instances of the key metaphors “water,” “wind,” and “waves” were identified through slice similarity analysis. The results demonstrate that these metaphors serve three primary functions: as natural descriptions, as representations of psychological states, and as components of philosophical arguments. A comparison with earlier texts reveals that the metaphor in AFM shares the perspective of affirming the mind’s immutable nature, as found in the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra and the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra. Its argumentative structure also shows affinities with the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra.
The significance of this study is threefold. First, it demonstrates that large-scale Buddhist textual corpora can be effectively analyzed using rule-based computational methods, in particular slice similarity analysis. Second, it identifies pre-AFM uses of the metaphor and shows that its psychological applications fall into two distinct categories. Third, it suggests that the metaphor in AFM may share conceptual and doctrinal affinities not only with the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra but also with earlier scriptures such as the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. |
