Maewon ilgi is the diary of Maewon Kim Gwang-gye (1580–1646), a Confucian scholar of mid-Joseon Korea who resided in Ocheon-ri, Yean-hyeon, Gyeongsang Province. The Gwangsan Kim clan, settled in Ocheon, had established a strong scholarly lineage rooted in the Toegye school of Neo-Confucianism. Building upon this academic foundation, Kim Gwang-gye served multiple terms as head of Dosan Seowon and Yeokdong Seowon, solidifying his position as a prominent scholar. This study examines how a seventeenth-century Confucian scholar in the Yeongnam region made use of Buddhist temples and interacted with monks, based on the records in Maewon ilgi. His diary frequently mentions visits to temples such as Unamsa, Yongsusa, and Seongcheonsa, revealing that Confucian scholars utilized these sites as places for exam preparation, reading, recuperation from illness, and temporary retreats. These temples also served as local nodes of social interaction, where the Gwangsan Kim clan association and various relatives, acquaintances, and officials gathered and communicated. Furthermore, an analysis of interactions with monks shows that scholars engaged in cultural and sensory exchanges such as reading, discourse, and excursions. They also engaged in practical collaborations through buying and selling books, opening ferry routes, renovating hermitages, composing gwonseonmun, and maintaining temple facilities, illustrating their coexistence with the local community. This study highlights the multifaceted roles of Buddhist temples seventeenth-century Joseon Confucian society. Rather than standing in opposition to one another, Confucian scholars and Buddhist monks maintained close, everyday connections that transcended simple religious boundaries. |
