This study investigates whether compassion is an innate human quality or a psychological capacity that can be cultivated through training, by comparing perspectives from Buddhist traditions—particularly those grounded in Tathāgatagarbha thought, Yogācāra, and Madhyamaka—with insights from contemporary science. In Buddhist philosophy, compassion is intimately connected with bodhicitta, the foundational motivation of the bodhisattva path. In contrast, evolutionary psychology and neuroscience conceptualize compassion as an adaptive trait that evolved to support survival and social cooperation. Recent scientific findings—such as those concerning neuroplasticity, oxytocin, the vagus nerve, and the default mode network—demonstrate that compassion is a trainable capacity with measurable psychological and physiological effects. This comparative inquiry suggests that traditional Buddhist compassion practices can be reinterpreted through the language of modern science, thereby opening possibilities for an integrated understanding at the intersection of ethics, contemplative training, and empirical research. Today, compassion is increasingly recognized not only as a latent human potential but also as a developable skill that offers a vital resource for healing and connection. At the same time, scientific accounts that disregard the doctrinal and experiential depth of Buddhist traditions risk reducing or distorting the true significance of compassion. Thus, a meaningful interdisciplinary understanding of compassion must rest on a thorough engagement with the philosophical context within which it is embedded. This paper proposes a theoretical groundwork for such integrative dialogue. |
