본 논문은 불교의 전통적 생명윤리 관점에서 안락사 문제를 재조명하고, 현대 의료 기술 발전에 따른 새로운 해석 가능성을 탐구한다. 전통적으로 불교는 불살생 계율에 따라 안락사를 부정적으로 보았으나, 현대 의학의 발전으로 무의미한 연명치료와 환자의 삶의 질 문제가 대두되면서 새로운 윤리적 고민이 필요해졌다. 이에 본 논문은 계율의 재해석 가능성, 불살생계와 고통 경감의 관계, 업의 가변성과 개인의 자율성 측면에서 안락사에 대한 불교적 정당화를 시도한다. 특히 극심한 고통 속에서 회복 가능성이 없는 환자의 경우, 무조건적 생명 연장보다는 자비의 실천으로서 제한적 안락사가 허용될 수 있다고 본다. 불교의 무상과 중도 사상에 비추어볼 때, 죽음은 삶의 자연스러운 흐름의 일부이며, 과도한 집착이나 극단적 태도를 지양해야 한다. 따라서 안락사는 환자의 고통, 회복 가능성, 자율성을 종합적으로 고려하여 중도적 관점에서 접근해야 하며, 이는 불교의 자비 정신과 현대 의료윤리의 조화로운 해석이 될 수 있다.
This paper reexamines the issue of euthanasia from the perspective of traditional Buddhist bioethics and explores new possibilities for interpretation in light of modern medical technological advances. Traditionally, Buddhism viewed euthanasia negatively according to the precept against killing, but with the advancement of modern medicine, new ethical considerations have become necessary as issues of futile life-sustaining treatment and patient quality of life have emerged.this paper attempts to provide Buddhist justification for euthanasia in terms of the possibility of reinterpreting precepts, the relationship between the non-killing precept and pain reduction, and the variability of karma and individual autonomy. In particular, for patients who have no possibility of recovery while experiencing extreme suffering, it suggests that limited euthanasia could be permitted as an act of compassion rather than unconditional life extension.light of Buddhist concepts of impermanence and the Middle Way, death is seen as a natural part of life's flow, and excessive attachment or extreme attitudes should be avoided. Therefore, euthanasia should be approached from a middle-way perspective that comprehensively considers the patient's suffering, possibility of recovery, and autonomy. This can serve as a harmonious interpretation between the Buddhist spirit of compassion and modern medical ethics.
