| 摘要 | This paper outlines 4 ideological functions to which Buddhism has been put in the island's development process: As a sacred historiography Buddhism has provided the Sinhalese politicians with the vision of a premodern, "classical" and buddhistinspired civilization, which serves the actual development programmes as a model of orientation and as an end — to be achieved exclusively by the Sinhalese. As philosophy Buddhism has provided a college-trained buddhist intelligentsia with a supposedly infallible "humanist" and "balanced" method of development. An ethical concept of Buddhism, the notion of "merit making" has provided ambitious entrepreneurs and politicians with a supposedly traditional and religious motivation to engage themselves in philanthropic works and development efforts. And finally an important ritual of Buddhism, the exorzism of the "pirith" chant has provided the ruling elite and a buddhist educated public with a ceremony by which the Buddha's protection can be evoked for various development projects and by which the supposedly buddhist inspiration of the nation's development efforts can be demonstrated. |
