| 摘要 | Although Korean society has never known religious unity, the principle of family continuity has in some measure served to reconcile divergent beliefs and effect synthetical forms. The oldest religious form, sin kyo, is a spirit worship similar to Siberian shamanism, in which priests and priestesses (mudang) are commissioned to establish contact with ancestors through spirit mediums. Confucianism, based upon ancestor worship and conceiving society as an aggregate of families, formerly alternated in political influence with Buddhism, whose monastic system sharply contradicted the concept of family obligation. Buddhism, however, provided elements of purification and salvation failing in the other religions. In response to local exigencies it fused with sin kyo in various forms of popular Buddhism, in which, for instance, monks exercise functions of the mudang and conduct ancestor worship services. Confucian rituals, performed exclusively by men, are derived from traditional ancestor worship, but are not far removed in belief from sin kyo. Members of the sin kyo cults are generally women, but the ceremonies are paid for, and on occasion defended by, the men. |
