| 摘要 | The Carakasaṃhitā (hereafter CS) demonstrates that the timing of death in living beings is influenced by “destiny” (daiva) and “individual actions” (puruṣakāra). It introduces the concepts of “untimely death” (akālamr̥tyu) and “timely death” (kālamr̥tyu), and suggests that treatment is beneficial for “untimely death,” while prohibiting treatment for “timely death.” A noteworthy aspect of the CS’s argument is the centrality of “time” placed within the concept of “death.” This “time” is closely intertwined with the flow of life, and serves as a point at which fundamental human issues intersect. In empirical matters, consistency in obtaining the same results based on logic is typically the standard. However, in the field of medicine, diverse outcomes can arise based on individual circumstances, and the only certain outcome, regardless of the presence or absence of treatment, is ultimately the arrival of “death.” This fact, when focusing on the certainty of the outcome “death,” may potentially diminish the perceived usefulness of treatment. In this context, the CS introduces the concept of “untimely death” and “timely death,” refraining from regarding the time of one’s death as predetermind. The CS highlights the role of human actions in influencing “untimely death.” According to the perspective in the CS, being alive is inherently a state awaiting “death,” sustained by varying amounts of āyus in individuals. When āyus is depleted, the transition to the state of “death” occurs. Furthermore, the timing of this transition is not determined by āyus itself but is believed to be influenced by destiny and human actions. The key element in this discussion is “time.” The CS focuses on “time” to demonstrate how individual actions in the present have an impact on the future. In the context of the uncertain “duration” of the “time” until “death” occurs, the CS provides insights not only into the usefulness of treatment, but also into how one should live and make choices in the present, offering valuable suggestions for considering current actions and future decisions. |
