| 摘要 | Many Sanskrit manuscripts of the text have been discovered since the publication of Nanjō Bunyū’s critical edition of the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra （LAS）, 1923. Whereas Nanjō’s edition refers to only 4 manuscripts, more than 30 have been identified so far. In this article, I examine points related to the formation of the LAS as a result of reading newly discovered manuscripts, especially regarding the Sagāthakam （SAG） section. In the SAG as found in manuscripts, two pādas of 16-syllable verses are often missing and there are different arrangements of verses than those found in Nanjō’s text. This suggests that the verses included in the SAG were grouped into 2-pāda, 16-syllable units of the śloka meter. It can be inferred that the authors of the scripture combined them freely, created passages of the scriptures based on them, sometimes added new verses that were digested or developed in consideration of the passages, and blended them into the original verses. Therefore, the SAG includes not only old verses that were the basis for the sūtra, but also newly added verses. Since the SAG was not included in the earliest Chinese translations, it was traditionally thought to have been added later. However, it is now thought that it was formed in close relationship with the formation of the scripture. |
