| 摘要 | In this article, I explore the understudied mortuary practices of late Ming eunuchs. Despite being central figures in the religious landscape of Ming Capital Beijing, their religious lives remain underrepresented in traditional historiography. This article places emphasis on the specific context of eunuchs' experiences, accounting for various factors, from the social implications of castration and eunuchs' severance from home to their relationship with Confucianism and values and needs that shaped their religious practices. Drawing from autobiographical notes, stelae inscriptions, epigraphic evidence, and other sources including poems, gazetteers, and travel diaries, this article shows the complex interplay between eunuchs and Buddhist institutions concerning their mortuary practices. Furthermore, it considers eunuchs from a range of social strata, ranging from top-ranking officers to those in menial roles whose lives were less documented than their well-educated and powerful counterparts. By looking into their mortuary customs, I argue that palace eunuchs negotiated and defined their identity, legacy, and posthumous memory through burials in Buddhist institutions. |
