摘要Acala or Fudo typifies the firm resolve of the adept bent on attaining the Awakening. The symbolism contained in his iconographical representations - so very explicit in the texts to which we have just referred - is one of the richest in the esoteric tradition of Buddhism.

It is probably due to the importance of the mountain in popular Japanese religion that Fudo is revered in Japan. He thus has a shared heritage with the guiding spirits of shamanlike individuals. Thanks to his charisma and his role as a substitute, he can even be looked upon as the personification of the highland ascetic (yamabushi) who quite often appears in the role of a medium.

With the restoration of the Miji and the subsequent rise of militarism, the Marita-Fudo sanctuaries across the country developed into places of prayer for military success and the safe return of sons away at war. They are now places of prayer for world peace and safety on the roads.
