This paper examines the Zen thought expressed in Huangbo Xiyun's recorded sayings in "Chuan Xin Fa Yao" and "Wan Ling Record", as well as in the sayings of Huangbo quoted in "The Record of Linji", composed by Huangbo's disciple, Linji Yixuan. "Chuan Xin Fa Yao" and "Wan Ling Record" are collections of Huangbo's teachings compiled by Pei Xiu, who was a student of Huangbo's teachings. It is presumed that these collections mention doctrinal teachings because they were preached to Pei Xiu, who had a good understanding of the doctrine. The central practice of Zen in these texts is "One Mind". Huangbo identifies the essence of Chinese Zen as "One Mind", emphasizing that both Buddhas and sentient beings possess this "One Mind". However, sentient beings cling to the forms of this "One Mind", seeking Buddha externally. Therefore, Huangbo presents the essence of "One Mind" as being "No Mind", leading to "No Seeking" and "No Attachment", and proclaims "Mind Itself is Buddha" and "No Mind is the Way". Huangbo calls this comprehensive method of Zen "The Dharma Gate of the Mind Ground". The Zen thought of Huangbo presented in "Chuan Xin Fa Yao" and "Wan Ling Record" generally aligns with this. The paper argues that the Zen thoughts of "One Mind", "No Seeking", "No Attachment", "Mind Itself is Buddha", "No Mind is the Way", and "The Dharma Gate of the Mind Ground" all originate from the Southern School of Zen, inherited through Hui Heung , Mazu Daoyi, and Baizhang Huaihai. Huangbo's Zen thought, as cited in "The Record of Linji" by his successor Linji, appears to be Linji's own unique view. Linji defines the essence of Chinese Zen as "Not being deceived by people". Linji regards all Buddhist teachings and masters' instructions as "Not being deceived by people". However, the difference in Linji's expression does not signify a divergence from Huangbo's thought. This differentiation in expression is considered a compassionate effort by Zen masters to lead individuals to an autonomous realization of the ultimate principle of Zen. This aspect signifies the important implications of Huangbo's Zen thought. |
