This paper examines the dialogues between Buddhists and Mīmāṃsakas on conceptual perception (savikalpaka) as presented in the Tattvasaṅgrahapañjikā and Ślokavārttika, with a focus on their intertextuality and rhetorical strategies. Buddhist epistemologists, beginning with Dignāga, define perception (pratyakṣa) as cognition devoid of conceptualization (kalpanāpoḍha). In contrast, Kumārila, a Mīmāṃsaka, divides perception into nonconceptual (ālocanājñāna) and conceptual cognition (savikalpaka). For Kumārila, an individual (vyakti) is apprehended by nonconceptual perception, while its particular (viśeṣa) and universal (sāmānya) are apprehended by conceptual perception in a subsequent moment. After introducing Kumārila’s ideas, Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla refute them as follows: Every perception is nonconceptual because it apprehends only the particular (svalakṣaṇa), which is ineffable. Perception cannot grasp only the universal—since, as Kumārila himself acknowledges, the universal and the particular are not entirely distinct from each other. Nor can perception grasp both the particular and the universal simultaneously, as a single cognition can apprehend only a single characteristic. Furthermore, Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla suppose Kumārila’s assertion that perceptual judgment can be a means of valid cognition (pramāṇa), akin to inference (anumāna), as both pertain to the exclusion of superimposition (samāropavyavaccheda). Regarding this idea, they clarify that inference provides awareness of a new object by excluding superimposition, whereas perceptual judgment does not involve superimposition that needs to be excluded. Finally, Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla emphasize that the universal cannot exist either as identical to or different from the particular. While this discussion maintains the basic Buddhist position that perceiving reality without conceptualization is a means of valid cognition, it also offers a new approach to reading Indian intellectual history by presenting a hypothetical dialectic that directly introduces and criticizes the Mīmāṃsaka’s theory of perception. |
