This paper presents an overview of the cultural and economic history of the Himalaya. The growth of trans-montane trade, the development of intensive agriculture, and the distribution of ethnically diverse populations throughout the region are tied to the formation of successive Hindu and Buddhist states. Of central concern are the processes by which the region was integrated into the colonial economy of British India during the nineteenth century.
Cette étude passe en revue l'histoire culturelle et économique de l'Himalaya. La croissance du commerce trans-montagnard, l'expansion de l'agriculture intensive, et la répartition des peuples ethniquement différents dans la région ont contribué à la formation des Etats successifs, hindou et bouddhiste. L'intérêt principal porte sur les processus par lesquels cette région a été intégrée dans l'économie coloniale de l'Inde britannique au cours du dix-neuvième siècle.
Diese Veröffentlichung liefert einen Überblick über die kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Geschichte des Himalaya. Das Wachstum des transhimalayischen Handels, die Entwicklung intensiver Landwirtschaft, und die Verteilung ethnisch unterschiedlicher Bevölkerungsgruppen über das ganze Gebiet stehen in engem Zusammenhang mit der aufeinanderfolgenden Gründung von Hindu- und Buddhist-Staaten. Die Integration dieses Gebietes in die koloniale Wirtschaft des britisch beherrschten Indiens während des 19. Jahrhunderts ist von besonderem Interesse.
Este trabajo examina la historia cultural y económica del Himalaya. El crecimiento del comercio trans-cordillerano, el desarrollo de la agricultura intensiva y la distribución de distintas poblaciones étnicas en toda la region, están relacionadas con la formación de sucesivos estados hindúes y budistas. De interés principal son los proceses por medio de la cuales la región fue integrada a la economía colonial de la India inglesa durante el siglo diecinueve.
