摘要
이 글에서는 『권수정혜결사문』 제7문답에 나타난 지눌 선사의 정토수행론을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해서 먼저 제7문답의 구성과 내용을 분석하고, 다음으로 제7문답에서 지눌 선사가 강조했던 수행의 근본을 파악하여, 이를 지눌 선사의 정토 수행론으로 정리하였다.
지눌 선사는 제7문답을 크게 여섯 부분으로 구성하였다. 선사는 처음에 1) 대심중생의 특징을 설명하고 이들을 상근이라고 구분하였고, 마지막에는 4) 최하근이라는 용어로써 칭명(稱名)만으로도 희유하다고 여기는 이들을 나누었다. 그리고 중간에는 2) 자력과 타력으로 안과 밖이 서로 돕는 수행을 하는 사람 두 종류(①, ②)를 묶어서 설명하고, 또 3) 불법 가운데 마음을 잘 쓰지 못해서 장애에 막힘이 많은 사람 둘(①, ②)을 구분해서 설명하였다. 또한 선사는 최하근 외에 다시 5) 심법의 가르침은 알지 못하지만, 실제의 수행에서는 범행을 이루는 사람과 6) 조종문하(祖宗門下)에 이심전심으로 비밀한 뜻을 전하는 격외선 수행자를 밝혔다. 지눌 선사는 여섯 부분을 수행자의 근기에 따라 나타나는 수행의 특징으로 구분하였다.
지눌 선사는 각각의 근기에서 닦는 정토 수행을 말하는 가운데 선문 수행자가 닦아야 하는 바른 정토 수행을 강조하였다. 1)에서는 대심범부가 불심인 자심·불성인 법성을 신해하고, 신해를 의지해서 이루는 법성정토를 말하였고, 2)·3)·4)·5)에서는 부처님의 뜻을 알고 닦는 수행으로서의 정토 수행을 반복적으로 말하였다. 그리고 제5)에서는 고금의 달자(達者)가 구했던 정토는 결국 진여를 깊이 믿고 정혜를 오로지 하는 것임을 밝혔다. 그래서 이와 같은 세 가지 특징을 법성정토를 닦는 수행, 부처님의 뜻을 알고 닦는 수행, 진여를 믿고 정혜를 오로지 하는 수행 등으로 정리하였고, 이 모두는 결국 진여를 믿고 정혜를 오로지 하는 수행으로 돌아간다고 파악하였다.
In this article, I tried to grasp Jinul (知訥, 1158~1210)’s theory of pure land practice focusing on the seventh question and answer in Gwonsujeonghyegyeolsamun (『勸修定慧結社文』). To this end, first I analyzed the composition and content of the seventh question and answer and then figured out the basis of the practice emphasized by Jinul in the seventh question and answer and summarized it as Jinul’s theory of the practice of pure land.
The seventh question and answer consists of six parts according to sentient beings’ faculties: he classified (1) people with the great mind as the uppermost faculties (上根); (2) two types of people who practice helping each other inside and outside with self-power and others’ help as the second group; (3) two types of people who are blocked a lot because they are not good at using their minds in Buddha’s dharma as the third group; (4) people regarded as rare only if they invoke a buddha’s name as the lowermost faculties (最下根); (5) people who do not know the teachings of the Dharma of mind but achieve clean acts in actual practice as the fifth group; (6) people who convey secret meanings by the way of transmission from mind to mind in the Zen patriarchy as the sixth group. Jinul classified these six groups into the characteristics of practice that appear according to the faculties of practitioners.
Jinul emphasized the proper practice of pure land that zen practitioners should perform, referring to the practice of pure land according to each faculty. As for the first group, he talked about the pure land of dharma nature achieved by the ordinary people with the great mind who believe and understand that the Buddha's mind is their mind and the Buddha's character is dharma nature. About the second to fifth groups, he repeatedly said the practice of pure land which is the practice of knowing the will of Buddha. Finally, as for the sixth group, he revealed that the pure land pursued by all the adepts of all ages was to deeply believe in tathāta and devote oneself to meditation and wisdom.
To sum up, he summarized these three characteristics: (1) practice of the pure land of dharma nature, (2) practice of knowing the will of Buddha, and (3) practice of deeply believing in tathāta and devoting oneself to meditation and wisdom. And he concluded that all of these eventually return to the third practice, the practice of deeply believing in tathāta and devoting oneself to meditation and wisdom.
