摘要
퇴옹성철(1912-1993)은 자신의 수행에서 비롯된 불교의 핵심을 현대 학문을 이용한 법어로 대중에게 전한 인물이다. 시대적 고민을 담은 성철의 대중법어는 현대적인 학문, 특히 과학을 활용한 법문과 일반 대중을 향하여 발표한 우리말 법어의 형태로 나타났다. 이 글은 성철의 두 가지 대중법어 내용을 중심으로 시대적 의의를 찾아본 것이다. 성철은 1960년대 대학생을 상대로 하는 법문에서 불교가 낡고 우매한 것이 아니라, 신선하고 경이로운 것임을 전달하기 위해, 우리가 살고 있는 세상이 고통과 번뇌로 가득 찬 세상이 아니라, 불생불멸임을 물질적인 면과 정신적인 면의 두 가지 측면에서 객관적인 입증을 하려고 한다. 또한, 1980년대 대중법어를 통해서는 견성즉불과 본래성불이라는 불교 개념어를 현대의 우리말로 표현하였다. 이상과 같은 성철의 대중법어는 진실 그 자체인 방편을 잘 구현한 예라고 할 수 있다.
Toe-ong Seongcheol (1912-1993) is a person who introduced the core of Buddhism from his practice to the public in the language of modern knowledge. His public dissemination which contains his concerns of the times, was presented in the form of modern knowledge, especially in the form of Dharma Talks using science and ordinary language, to the general public. This paper is for searching the significance of the times of his two ways of the public dissemination. In his Dharma Talks to many university students during 1960s, Seongcheol tried to prove that Buddhism is not old and stupid, but fresh and wonderful, in two aspects: material and spiritual, that the world we live in is not a world full of pain and anguish, but neither non-appearing nor non-disappearing. In the 1980s, he also expressed Buddhist conceptions such as “Gyeonseong-jeukbul” (見性卽佛, Seeing one’s nature is just Buddha) and “Bollae-seongbul” (本來成佛, Originally Buddha) in modern Korean. His public dissemination is a good example of utilizing the skillful means of the truth itself.
