종교에 있어서 죽음의 문제는 핵심적 주제이다. 중국 5세기 불교의 초기 수용과정에서 이루어진 아미타 정토사상은 죽음과 사후 세계에 대한 당시의 종교적 관념이 투영된 사유이다. 이러한 사상을 잘 드러내는 자료는 5세기 중엽 승우(僧祐)의 『홍명집(弘明集)』이다. 그 중 아미타 정토사상의 맥락으로 이해할 수 있는 것은 종병(宗炳)의 ｢종거사병답하승천서난백흑론(宗居士炳答何承天書難白黑論)｣이다. 이 글은 죽음의 문제로서의 열반(涅槃)과 사후 세계로서의 윤회(輪廻)와 정토(淨土)의 문제를 중심으로 서술된다. 종병은 이 글에서 불교를 믿지 않는 사람들의 비판뿐만 아니라, 불교 내부 사람들의 비판까지도 반박한다. 죽음의 문제는 결국 ‘나’는 누구인가라는 문제에서부터 출발되며, 그 문제를 밝히기 위해서는 연기(緣起)와 공(空)에 대한 이해가 선행된다. 아미타 정토사상은 이러한 불교 개념의 논리적 전개 과정으로부터 성립되며, 당시의 불경 번역과 이해의 성숙 과정이 결부되어 드러난 현상이다. 특히 주목할 점은 아미타 정토사상이 불교의 철학적 논변뿐만 아니라, 종교적 신념으로서 당시 불교의 경향을 보여준다는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 불교 철학과 종교의 현상을 설명하는 문헌을 중심으로 그 사유를 분석하고자 한다.
In religion the matter of death is a main theme. In 5th century China, the thought of Amitâbha and the Pure Land in the process of acceptance of Buddhism is an idea that was projected by the death and the afterlife. Hong-Ming-Ji shows this thought in 5th century. Zong Bing’s “Nan-BaiHei-Lun” is understood the context of the thought of Amitâbha and the Pure Land. This text is described as the Nirvana (涅槃) in the matter of the death and the Samsara (輪廻) and the Pure Land in the matter of the afterlife. Zong Bing refuted the criticism of Buddhism that was understood by both non-buddhist and buddhist with distrust. The matter of the death is about the matter of ‘who I am?’, and this is about the understanding about pratītya-samutpanna (緣起) and the emptiness. The thought of Amitâbha and the Pure Land is established from the process of developing the logic about the buddhist concepts, and is a phenomenon that colligated translating Buddhist scriptures and understanding those. Especially the thought of Amitâbha and the Pure Land shows the buddhist philosophy as well as the religion of Buddhism. This study is to analyse the text for explaining the phenomenon about the Buddhism as philosophy and religion.
