摘要
본고는 백곡처능의 생애와 활동을 본격적으로 검토하고, 그의 불교 수호와 불교계 보호를 다른 연구이다. 그의 성은 전씨로, 벽암각성의 제자 의현에게 출가하고 당대의 문인 신익성에게 유가사상을 4년간 사사하였다. 그런 후 벽암에게 입실하여 20여 년간 그의 수제자로서 순천과 전주 송광사를 비롯해 화엄사, 해인사, 법주사 등의 사찰에서 불사를 하면서 보조국사 지눌의 선풍을 현창하고 대둔산 안심사에서 가장 오래 머물면서 흥법을 일으키고자 하였으며, 말년에 김제 금산사에서 산립법회를 연 후 입적하였다.
백곡은 허응보우와 그에 의해 선발된 청허휴정의 불교수행서 등을 간행 보급하여 불교 수호를 위해 노력하였으며, 특히 스승 벽암의 『석문의상초』 등의 불교 의례집을 간행하여 불교의례서를 보급하여 유교계에 대응하고자 하였다.
당시 척불시책이 강화되어 승니의 혁거, 불교 본산이었던 봉은사와 봉선사와 도성내 비구니원 인수원과 자수원의 철훼 시도가 전개되자 장문의 논리 정연한 상소를 올려 불교 호법과 불교계 수호를 위해 정면으로 적극적으로 대응하였다.
그 후 백곡은 그의 스승 벽암과 그의 제자 회은에 이어 남한산성 도총섭으로 선정되었으나, 그의 사제와는 달리 잠시만 응했을 뿐 사의하였다. 벽암의 유지를 받들어 석가 진신사리가 봉안된 대둔산 안심사를 중심으로 흥법하고자 하였기 때문인 듯하다.
백곡은 부휴문파의 벽암각성의 수제자로 당대 유자들과 교유하면서 척불시책이 강화되는 시기에 불교호법과 불교계 수호를 위해 저항한 고승이었다.

Baekgok tried to protect Buddhism by publishing the Buddhist scriptures of the Buddhist monk Huh Eung-bowu and his selection.
He disseminated Buddhist rituals by publishing Buddhist books such as "Chunseokmunjeok" by his teacher, Byukam.
At the time of the strengthened Buddhist oppression, there were the removal of monks, and the removal of the Buddhist temple, Bongeunsa and Bongseon Temple, and There was the abolition of the temple's water source and the water source, which were female monks' temple in Hanyang such as Insuwon temple and Jasuwon temple.
To resist this, he tried to protect the Buddhist community by raising an appeal of GanPye-Seokgyo-so. He was the apprentice to the paraplegic family, Byukamgakseong, and was a prominent Buddhist monk who sought to protect the Buddhist community in times of interaction with overseas students.
