태공당(太空堂) 월주(月珠, 1935~2021) 스님은 한국불교 발전에 기여하면서 다양한 사회 활동을 했다. 이를 통해 불교의 가르침을 삶의 현장에서 구체적으로 실천했다. 1994년 제28대 조계종 총무원장에 취임한 후 범종단 차원에서 추진한 ‘깨달음의 사회화운동’은 대표적인 사례이다. 1998년 한국이 IMF 구제금융으로 국가경제는 물론 가정 살림이 파괴되는 상황에서 만들어진 실업극복국민운동본부에 참여한 것도 그 가운데 하나이다. 월주 스님은 김수환 추기경, 강원용 목사와 더불어 공동위원장을 맡아 정부에서 미처 살피지 못하는 국민을 돕기 위해 적극 나섰다. 특히 가정경제가 파탄나면서 길거리로 내몰린 실업자들에게 용기를 주고 자활과 재기의 의지를 불어 넣어주는 사업을 전개하는 데 최선을 다했다. IMF 외환위기의 전(全) 국가적 실업대란과 경제 불황을 극복하는데 종교지도자이자 사회지도자로 노력을 다했다. 또한 월주스님은 1998년 발족한 실업극복국민운동본부를 발전적으로 계승한 일하는재단의 이사장 직(職)을 2021년 원적에 들 때까지 수행했다. 실업극복과 일자리 창출은 정부에서 마땅히 해야 할 일이었지만 정부의 손길이 미치지 못하는 실직자들에 대한 지원사업을 전개하여, 문제의 심각성에 대한 사회적 공감대를 형성하고 실업자들에게 희망과 용기를 주었다. 이를 통해 한국사회의 안전망 구축에 일조했다는 평가를 받았다. 초대 이사장인 강원용 목사에 이어 2006년 9월 제2대 이사장으로 추대된 월주 스님은 함께일하는재단을 성공적으로 이끌었다. 지속 가능한 일자리 창출을 통해 사회양극화를 해소하여 건강하고 안전한 사회를 이루며, 나아가 국민화합에 이바지하였다. 월주 스님이 IMF 외환위기를 극복하는데 크게 기여했음은 사실이다. IMF 구제금융이라는 냉혹한 현실에 직면했을 때, 문제 해결에 주체적으로 나서 사회단체와 각계각층의 연대를 이끌어내면서 국가원로(國家元⽼)의 역할을 수행한 것이다. 궁극적으로 한국사회의 경제위기를 극복하고 사회통합과 양극화 해소에 기여했는데, 이는 불교의 가르침을 실질적으로 구현한 것이다. 불교에 대한 사회적으로 긍정적 이미지를 제고시켰다. 이 과정에서 다른 종교 지도자들과 연대하는 모습을 보여줌으로써, 공익을 위해서는 장벽을 두지 않는 화합과 연대의 모범도 보였다.
Monk Wolju participated in various social activities, contributing to the development of Korean Buddhism. Through this, the teachings of Buddhism were specifically practiced in the field of life. A case in point is the “socialization movement of enlightenment” promoted at the pan-jong level after taking office as the 28th general secretary of the Jogye Order in 1994. One of them was Korea's participation in the national unemployment recovery movement headquarters in 1998 at a time when the IMF bailout destroyed not only the national economy but also the family's livelihood. Monk Wolju, along with Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan and Pastor Kang Won-yong, co-chaired the committee, actively sought to help the people who could not be seen by the government. In particular, he did his best to carry out projects that encourage the unemployed, who were pushed to the streets as the family economy collapsed, and instill the will to self-sufficiency and comeback. He made efforts as a religious and social leader to overcome the entire national unemployment crisis and economic recession of the IMF financial crisis. In addition, Monk Wolju served as the chairman (職) of the Working Foundation, which progressively inherited the National University Movement Headquarters, which was launched in 1998, until his death in 2021. Overcoming unemployment and creating jobs were the government's right thing to do, but it created a social consensus on the seriousness of the problem and gave hope and courage to the unemployed. Through this, it was evaluated as contributing to the establishment of a safety net in Korean society. Ultimately, it contributed to overcoming the economic crisis in Korean society and resolving social integration and polarization, which is a practical embodiment of Buddhist teachings. It enhanced the socially positive image of Buddhism. In this process, by showing solidarity with other religious leaders, there was also an example of harmony and solidarity that did not place barriers for the public interest.
