이 논문은 신학자 폴 F. 니터의 연구에 착안하여 기독교가 불교적 사유를 건설적으로 수용할 수 있는 길을 모색한다. 불교의 공(空)과 기독교의 신(神)을 연결 지으려는 여러 시도들은 원리적 담론에 그치며 두 종교를 실제적인 대화의 장으로 불러내는 데에는 실패해왔다. 이 논문은 두 종교가 건설적 관계에 이르는 길은 각 종교가 실제로 추구하는 삶에 초점을 맞추는 것임을 주장한다. 두 종교는 교리의 상이함에도 불구하고 추구하는 삶의 양상은 다르지 않으며 이 부분에 초점을 맞출 때 서로를 신앙적 통찰을 공유하는 대상으로 여길 수 있다는 것이다. 니터는 자신이 불교의 가르침을 통해 보다 온전한 크리스천이 되었다고 주장하며 불교에서 가르치는 연기(緣起)와 불이(不⼆)의 세계관을 받아들일 때 기독교인들이 그들의 신앙을 보다 온전히 추구할 수 있다고 하였다. 쉽게 말해 내가 남과 다르지 않다는 인식 속에서 예수가 가르친 이타적 삶을 적극적으로 추구할 수 있다는 것이다. 이것은 곧 우리가 서로 사랑할 때 그 안에 임재하시는 하나님을 체험하는 길이기도 하다. 니터의 주장을 비판적으로 수용하면서 이 논문은 기독교 역시 예수와의 연합이라는 교리 안에서 모종의 자타불이(⾃他不⼆)의 삶을 가르친다는 것을 말한다. 기독교 역시 단순히 독립적 개체로서의 나(我)가 아닌 타자들과의 연결 속에 존재하는 진정한 나를 말하고 있다는 것이다. 이렇게 이 논문은 두 종교가 지향하는 삶에 초점을 맞춰서 불교와 기독교가 동반자적 관계에 이를 수 있는 길을 모색한다.
This study explores ways for Christianity to adopt Buddhist thinking constructively, based upon the study of Paul F. Nitter. Several efforts to connect the Buddhist idea of sunyata (emptiness) with the Christian concept of God have failed to create a positive and productive relationship between Buddhism and Christianity. This study claims that only when the two religions focus on each other's vision of life rather than their notions of the ultimate reality (God or sunyata) can they establish a constructive relationship with each other. Even though the two religions differ fundamentally in several ways, their visions of authentic religious life are not that different; thus, they can regard each other as partners who can share insights into their lives and religion. Nitter, an American theologian, maintains that Christians can pursue their religious vision more fittingly when they adopt the Buddhist idea of interdependence; they can follow Jesus' teaching of altruistic life more actively when they realize that all beings are interdependent, and thus, we are one with our neighbors. In this way they can experience the essence of God who exists in the act of loving each other. While approving Nitter's claim critically, this paper suggests that Christianity, as well as Buddhism, teaches an idea of non-duality (“we do not differ from others”) in the doctrine of the union with Christ. This understands a true human as wholly existing in connection with other humans and the entire world. Therefore, this study attempts to pave the way for a true partnership and communication between Christianity and Buddhism.
