| 摘要 | 이 논문은 월주 대종사와 전북 불교의 관계 속에서 지역불교 활성화 문제를 해결하는데 필요한 지혜를 얻고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 월주 대종사 회고록 속에서 전북 불교에 대해 언급한 몇몇 장면들을 찾아내고, 그 안에서 전북 불교에 대한 월주 대종사의 업적을 도출하였다. 그 결과 월주 대종사가 정화 불사를 통해 전북 불교가 일어설 수 있는 기본적인 환경을 마련했고, 금산사 중창 불사와 전북 불교회관 건립 ․ 전북지역 불교 지원을 통해 전북 불교 발전의 토대를 구축했으며, 우수한 도제 양성을 통해 불교 발전을 이끌어 갈 인적 자원을 확충했다는 점을 분명히 하였다.
월주 대종사가 전북 불교에 끼친 영향은 한 마디로 전북 불교 발전의 인프라와 인적 자원 구축으로 압축할 수 있다. 그렇다면 월주 대종사의 열반 이후, 전북 불교는 월주 대종사가 일궈낸 전북 불교 발전의 토대를 얼마나 잘 계승하고 있을까? ‘지방소멸’이라는 위기에 당면한 금산사 사부대중의 반응을 살펴보고, 그에 대한 평가와 한계를 검토하였다.
본격적인 논의에 앞서 인구감소 추세와 지방소멸 담론의 등장, 인구감소가 불교에 미치는 영향 등을 정리하였다. 이어서 지역 인구감소가 지역불교에 미치는 영향에 대해 논의하였다. 이를 통해 지역 인구감소가 불자들의 감소, 사찰의 재정 악화와 불교의 사회적 영향력 축소 등으로 지역불교의 쇠퇴를 초래할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 그리고 몇 가지 통계적, 인구학적 분석 결과들을 통해서 현재 전북 불교가 취약한 교세에 지방소멸 위기가 가중되는 매우 심각한 위기에 직면해 있음을 확인하였다.
이런 상황에서 금산사 사부대중은 ‘원탁회의’라는 매개체를 통해 지역불교의 위기 극복을 시도하고 있음을 확인하였다. ‘원탁회의’는 대중의 공의를 모아 실천하는 불교적 방식을 채택하고 있다는 점, ‘깨달음의 사회화’ 운동 계승을 분명히 하고 있다는 점, 전북 지역과 전북 불교를 잇는 가교의 역할을 지향하고 있다는 점 등에서 긍정적이다. 다만, ‘원탁회의’에서 다루는 의제가 지역사회의 고통과 문제해결로 확장되지 못했다는 점, 아직까지는 ‘깨달음의 사회화’ 운동을 온전히 담아내지 못하고 있다는 점, 월주 대종사의 업적을 발전적으로 계승하는 방법에 대한 고민이 부족해 보인다는 점 등은 아쉬움으로 남아 있다. 이러한 한계 극복을 위한 의견을 간략히 서술하고, 나아가 효과적인 도심 포교 프로그램을 개발과 ‘깨달음의 사회화’ 운동에 ‘관계인구’ 개념의 도입을 고려해 보기를 제언하였다.
This study aims to gain wisdom on solving the problem of revitalizing local Buddhism through the relationship between Taegongdang Wolju, the Supreme Patriarch, and Jeonbuk Buddhism. To this end, we first identified several scenes in the memoirs of Wolju, the Supreme Patriarch, which mention Jeonbuk Buddhism and then derived Wolju's contribution to Jeonbuk Buddhism. Consequently, it is clear that Wolju, the Supreme Patriarch, prepared a conducive environment for Jeonbuk Buddhism to rise through the Buddhist Purification Movement. He built the foundation for developing Jeonbuk Buddhism by constructing the Geumsansa Temple and the Jeonbuk Buddhist Hall, supporting Buddhism in the Jeonbuk region, and expanding human resources to develop Buddhism by training excellent apprentices.
In summary, the impact of the Wolju, the Supreme Patriarch, on Jeonbuk Buddhism can be summarized as establishing infrastructure and human resources for developing Jeonbuk Buddhism. How well did Jeonbuk Buddhism, which was left behind after Wolju, the Supreme Patriarch, entered Nirvana, inherit the foundation for the development of Jeonbuk Buddhism laid by Wolju, the Supreme Patriarch? This article examines the response of the Geumsansa Temple community to the crisis of ‘local extinction’ and its assessments and limitations.
Before proceeding to the discussion, I will summarize the trends of depopulation, the emergence of the discourse on local extinction, and the impact of depopulation on Buddhism. I then discuss the effects of local depopulation on local Buddhism. I showed that local demographic decline can lead to the decline of local Buddhism through a decrease in the number of Buddhists, the deterioration of temple finances, and a reduction in Buddhism's social influence. Through statistical and demographic analyses, we conclude that Jeonbuk Buddhism is currently facing a serious crisis compounded by the risk of local extinction.
In this situation, I found that the Geumsansa Temple community is attempting to overcome the crisis faced by local Buddhism through ‘Round-table Meetings’. The ‘Round-table Meetings’ is positive because it adopts the Buddhist method of gathering and practicing an unbiased view. It inherited the ‘Social Expansion of Enlightenment’ movement and acted as a bridge between the Jeonbuk region and Jeonbuk Buddhism. However, disappointingly, the agenda of the ‘Round-table Meetings’ has not been expanded to address the suffering and problems of the local community. It has not yet fully captured the ‘Social Expansion of Enlightenment’ movement, and there seems to be a lack of consideration for how to continue the work of Wolju, the Supreme Patriarch.
