| 摘要 | 중유는 다른 인도철학전통의 윤회이론과 구별되는 독특한 불교 윤회이론으로, 그 개념은 바수반두의 저서 아비달마구사론에 정의된다. 이 논문은 아비달마구사론 ｢세간품｣ (世間品)에 기술된 중유이론의 특성을 바수반두 이론적 입장과 관련하여 살펴보았다. 바수반두의 사상은 설일체유부, 경량부, 유가학파의 세 가지 다른 불교 교리와 연관 지어 살펴볼 수 있다. 바수반두의 이러한 사상적 특징을 기반으로 아비달마구사론에서 확립된 중유이론을 탐구하였다. 아비달마구사론에서는 고정되고 불변하는 자아가 없어도 윤회의 과정이 업의 인과 관계에 의해 야기되는 중유를 통해 발생한다고 설명한다. 즉, 중유의 특성으로 인하여 중생은 윤회의 과정을 통해 사유 이전의 업을 완전히 상속 받는다. 이런 의미에서 중유의 존재에 대한 논의는 아비달마 교리의 논쟁이 되었다. 중유는 탄생, 삶, 죽음의 순환 과정에서 새로운 존재로 불교 역사에 등장했다. 따라서 중유 이론의 출현은 업, 무아, 윤회와 같은 다양한 불교 이론과 통합하여 이후 대승불교의 사상을 확장할 수 있게 해주었다. 그 결과 불교는 다른 종교 교리와 확연히 다른 독특한 사상으로 확립되었다. In this study, I examine the unique characteristics of antarābhava reflected in the theory of saṃsāra in Buddhism by paying close attention to two interrelated points: (a) Vasubandhu’s distinct theoretical position in the Buddhist doctrines, and (b) antarābhava described in the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya Chapter Lokanirdeśa (世間品). In so doing, this study illustrates that antarābhava appeared in the history of Buddhism as a new entity in the cycle of birth, life and death. The emergence of antarābhava, I thus indicate, enabled to extend the thoughts of Buddhism that conflate heterogeneous beings such as karma, no-self, and saṃsāra. Buddhism, by virtue of the emergence and development of antarābhava, was established and flourished as the unique thoughts that noticeably differ from other religious doctrines. |
