| 摘要 | The present study focuses attention on the old and widely discussed problem of aniconism in the early buddhist art of India. It offers a new look on the most influencial bibliography, regarding the subject, which has been produced from the first part of nineteenth century to our days. Various theories have been proposed about that problem and some scholars have even denied the existence itself of aniconism. Yet the question still seems to be open. This work calls into question those theories and presents a new interpretation of data both from an art historical and a doctrinal point of view. The main point implied is that anicoism was the solution to a difficult artistic problem. This solution was strictly bound with the idea of the Buddha which those early artistic works intended to give. |
