| 摘要 | It is well known that the Lotus Sūtra is one of the most frequently copied texts of East-Asian Buddhism. In medieval Japan, it played a pivotal role not only as one of the most important works of the Buddhist canon, but also as an object of pious devotion and state ceremony As such, it spawned a plethora of often artfully decorated copies and commentaries. This article concentrates on manuscripts of an indigenous Japanese genre of commentaries which are most intimately linked with the Lotus Sutra, the so-called "direct instructions" (jikidan). After a short introduction into the history of writing in pre-modern Japan and the general background of the genre, I will sketch some of the work that has been done lately on these manuscripts, not as carriers of textual information, but as historical objects. I will touch in turn on the fields of writing conventions, text management, and the use of paratexts. In doing this, I will try to (a) show the direction in which the methods of writing, structuring and supplementing the text developed during the time between the late middle ages and early modern times, and (b) establish some preliminary results linking my findings with the socio-historical background. I will conclude with an outlook and some proposals for the further course of research. |
