| 摘要 | 본 논고는 보조 지눌의 ‘무자화두십종병(無字話頭十種病)’과 청허 휴정의 ‘간화십종병(看話十種病)’의 항목 배치에 대해 비교 고찰하였다. 화두 참구시에 일어날 수 있는 병통으로 대변되는 ‘간화십종병’은 대혜 종고의 『서장』에서 산발적으로 제시된 화두 참구법에서 연원하여 보조 지눌이 모아서 같거나 유사한 항목들을 묶어 열 개의 조항으로 만든 것이다. 지눌에 이어 그의 제자인 진각 혜심, 조선의 청허 휴정과 백파 긍선, 진허 팔관, 용성 진종 등으로 이어졌다. 청허 휴정의 『선가귀감』에 제시된 ‘간화십종병’은 여타의 전적들과는 그 순서를 달리하였는데, 그 순서에 연유가 있을 것이라는 데에 착안(着眼)하게 되어, 어떠한 의도에 의해 배치된 항목인가를 살펴보았다. 그래서 나열 순서를 간화선의 화두 참구 수행의 순숙도와 연계해서 살펴볼 수도 있겠다는 가정하에 고찰하였다.
그 결과, ‘유심(有心)’으로서 의근에서 사량분별하여 헤아리는 거친 병통에서부터 ‘무심(無心)’으로서 눈썹을 움직이고 눈을 껌벅이고, ‘언어(言語)’로서 말길에서 살길을 모색하거나 문자를 끌어들여 입증하며 화두를 제기하는 그 자리에서 바로 알아차리려 하고, ‘적묵(寂默)’으로서 아무 일 없는 경계 속에다 내버려두고 유무의 무라거나 진무의 무라거나 특정한 도리라고 이해하고 미혹한 채로 깨달음을 기다리는 데에 이르기까지 이 네 가지로 귀결되어 진행됨을 볼 수 있다. 그래서, 청허 휴정의 간화십종병은 유심, 무심, 언어, 적묵으로의 거침에서 미세함으로 진행되는 화두 참구의 여정에 따른 순숙도에 의한 것으로 볼 수 있을 것으로 본다. 따라서, 보조 지눌의 「간화결의론」에 제시된 십종병통의 순서는 ‘무자화두십종병’이라 명명함이 가장 적합하다 할 것이고, 청허 휴정의 『선가귀감』에 제시된 십종병통의 순서는 모든 화두 참구에 있어서의 화두 참구 순숙도와 연관성이 적용되므로 ‘간화십종병’이라는 명칭으로 불리는 것이 타당할 것으로 본다.
This paper compared and examined the arrangement of items in Pojo Chinul’s Ten Diseases of Mucha hwadu (無字話頭十種病) and Ch’ŏnghŏ Hyujŏng’s Ten Diseases of Kanhwa (看話十種病). The Ten Diseases of Kanhwa, represented by illnesses that can occur during hwadu exploration, originated from the hwadu exploration method sporadically presented in Dahui Zonggao’s Shuzuang (書狀), and Pojo Chinul compiled the same or similar items into ten categories. Chinul was followed by his disciples Chin’gak Hyesim, Ch’ŏnghŏ Hyujŏng and Paekp’a Kŭngsŏn of Chosŏn, Chinhŏ P’algwan, and Yongsŏng Chinjong. The order of the Ten Diseases of Kanhwa presented in Ch’ŏnghŏ Hyujŏng’s Sŏnga kwigam (禪家龜鑑) is different from that found in other records. Therefore, it is possible that the order of arrangement was connected with the level of maturity in kanhwa Sŏn’s hwadu ch’amgu practice.
As a result, starting from the harsh pain of counting where one discerns righteousness and morality as “having mind” (有心), it is the place where you can move your eyebrows and blink your eyes with “no mind” (無心), find a way to live in the way of “words” (言語), or use letters to discuss a topic and prove one’s point of view. Trying to notice right away, being confined in the boundary where nothing happens as a “silent silence” (寂默), understanding that there is nothing, “nothing nothing,” or a certain way, and waiting for enlightenment while being delusional are possible. Therefore, the Ten Diseases of Kanhwa of Ch’ŏnghŏ Hyujŏng can be seen as reflecting the degree of maturity according to the journey of studying the hwadu, which progresses from coarseness to “having mind” (有心), “no mind” (無心), “words” (言語) and ‘”silent silence” (寂默). Therefore, it would be most appropriate to name the order of the Ten Diseases of Sŏn (十種禪病) presented in Pojo Chinul’s Kanhwa kyŏrŭi ron (看話決疑論) as the “Ten Diseases of Mucha hwadu” (無字話頭十種病), and the order of the Ten Diseases of Sŏn (十種禪病) presented in Ch’ŏnghŏ Hyujŏng’s Sŏnga kwigam, as the “Ten Diseases of Kanhwa”, because these orders of presentation are related to the level of maturity of the hwadu ch’amgu in Korean literature. |
