| 摘要 | The article discusses the use of transfer in the construction of Gandharan scenes. A case never before considered by scholars is analysed in detail: that of the Four Encounters. In three reliefs, Siddhārtha is portrayed on a horse whose hooves are supported by yakṣas, according to the iconographic model created for the Great Departure, utilised, starting from Sāñcī, throughout Buddhist art from Gandhāra to the Far East. The adoption of this semantic sign - up to now deemed exclusive to the Great Departure - confirms that transfer is employed in the figurative language of Gandhāra, facilitates a new and certain identification of several sculptures, and on the whole points to the need for great caution in reading fragmentary reliefs. The article also surmises that the iconographic choice identified here for the first time is also dictated by the desire of the patron and/or the artist to underline the symbolic analogy between the two episodes. |
