| 摘要 | The monastic economy played an important role for the development of Mongolian economy and society. Regular markets were held in the richest monasteries located along the main caravan routes and Chinese merchants flocked there to sell goods to Mongol pilgrims. Monasteries were also involved in cattle and sheep breeding, in renting their land to farmers as well as lending money at high interest rate. Moreover, they were free from taxes. Witness of monastic economy can be found in many accounts and diaries kept by Western travellers crossing the Mongolian plateau during the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twenty century. |
