As a cultural and religious system, Chinese Buddhism with its theoretical development of Buddhist doctrine has evolved its own style to actively use music in terms of training and propagation. This study will reveal the musicality developed by Chinese Buddhism while contrasting Buddhism's original attitude toward music and Chinese Buddhism's thought on music. In particular, the essential factors that developed the rich musicality of Chinese Buddhism, such as rituals and ceremonies, the monastic life, and “the unity of heaven and man (天人合一)”, an ancient Chinese philosophical concept, will be examined. Buddhist thought was universally imported during the Northern and Southern Dynasties and began to be systematized. Buddhism originated from India, but from the time it entered China, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism began to converge and continue to influence Chinese thought. Buddhism has formed an important branch of Buddhism after being Chineseized. Though its doctrines and teachings are rooted in Indian Buddhism, Buddhism in China is closely fused with Chinese culture. Although Buddhist traditions have developed differently for each period and region, the basic principles of Buddhist thought and practice based on the Eight-fold Paths and the Four Noble Truths are the same. In terms of music, however, Buddhism in China is more original than Buddhism in other cultures, and contains many elements of traditional Chinese music. Chinese Buddhist thought on music is based on Buddhist doctrine, and in the process of monastic life, it establishes the relationship between heaven and humans through Buddhist rituals. The use of music in this process is based on a combination of traditional Chinese music, the Buddhist Chanting. Through the effect of music, the practitioner achieves the state of "unity of heaven and man (天人合一)" which is the idea of Chinese Buddhist music. |
