This article started from the question of how Buddhist counseling, formed on the basis of the basic Buddhist doctrine of anattā(non-self), can utilize the concepts of self and ego developed in Western psychology. Comparing Jung’s theory of ego and the Self with Yogacara Buddhism’s theory of manas brings about a conclusion that if the function of the ego is defined as 'the subject of consciousness striving for self-realization', both Yogacara Buddhism and Jungian psychology will support the reinforcement of ego. From a Buddhist perspective, atman(我) in Yogacara Buddhism is a mind that corresponds to defilements, and the ego in Jungian psychology's self-realization process does not accompany the defilements, but rather corresponds to good mental components such as patience, faith, contemplation, diligence, and insight. From the standpoint of Yogacara Buddhism, though the ego of analytic psychology has the limit of not achieving indiscretion on its own as a dual perception, there is a strong belief in self-realization and constant effort to understand the contents of the unconscious, as well as observation and contemplation. The emphasis on non-self of Buddhism and the healthy ego of psychological counseling are not contradictory arguments. Buddhist non-self can also be viewed as a theory that supports the healthy ego which is emphasized in psychotherapy, especially analytical psychology. |
