| 摘要 | Anceint literary works such as the Pārājikāpāli of the Vinaya Pitaka, Pācittapāli, Mahāvaggapāli, Cullavaggapāli and Pālimuttaka Vinaya Viniccaya describe a special kind of building where Bhikkhus for maintenance of health, subjected themselves to a treatment of heat causing perspiration followed by a hot water bath. Ruins of such buildings are found among the Buddhist monasteries assigned to the period of the Rajarata civilization in Sri Lanka. The word Janthāghara appears as a pāli derivation from the Sanskrit word Jēntākagrha found in ancient Indian medical treatise of Caraka Saṁhitā. According to Caraka Saṁhitā the use of Janthāghara is one out of many therapies that causes the body to emit sweat (Caraka Saṁhitā Sūtrasthāna 14 Sveda Adyāya) However, Indian archaeology is yet to recover any evidence of a Janthāghara. This therapy which existed in Indian medical science had entered Buddhist monasteries in Sri Lanka. Later Arhant Mahinda Thero had introduced this therapy along with the introduction of Buddhism to this Island. It is possible to understand the function of a Janthāghara through a comparative study of the Vinaya texts with the remains of Janthāgharas that exit in Sri Lanka. |
