| 摘要 | The Jātakas as apart of Khuddaka Nikāya of Sutta Piṭaka narrate 550 stories of the Buddha. The stories are divided in 22 nipātas containing gāthās quoted in each story which is usually narrated by the Bodhisattva. Its commentaries (mūlaṭikā and aṭṭhakathās) are known as Jātakaṭṭhavaṇṇanā. The paper explains Jātakas characterizing animals, trees and tree spirits and sacrifices as a source of environmental virtues. Some of the Bodhisattvas as king or animal sacrificed themselves out of compassion as depicted in Jātaka stories. The Jātakas demonstrate that wild species and forest trees have the right to co-exist with human beings. The wisdom, perspicacity and prescience of ideas mentioned in Jātakas should be given due importance and attention they deserve in the formation of environmental ethics. |
