| 摘要 | The spread of the Rāma-Sītā and Rāvaṇa story in the island is examined, both from literary sources and folklore. References to the Rāmāyaṇa epic in the early literature appear in the Dīpavaṃsa and the Mahāvaṃsa, later chronicle Rājāvaliya, and the Kuveṇi asna. Some classical writings described Rāma-Sītā stories as idle talk. These stories began to be popular during the period of King Parākramabāhu II who was a devotee of Utpalavarṇa, and this God was identified with Rāma before long. Sītā was also referred to as Lakṣmī. Several Sandeśakāvyas make reference to the Rāmāyaṇa or Rāma. There are some ballads such as Rāvaṇa-katāva dealing with the story of Rāvana and these may be about four centuries old. In the Iṃgirisi-haṭana, a battle between the Sinhalese and the British, the Sinhalese leader and the British General are compared to Rāma and Rāvaṇa. The last king of Kandy was a devotee of God Rāma and there was a temple of Rāma at Hanguranketa which served as a retiring place of safety for the Kandy court. There is an abundance of folklore in Ceylon connected with the story of Rāma and Sītā. Some of these explain place-names; some point to special geographical features, others the lay of the land, the position of hills, nooks and bends in rivers, the colour of the soil and various curiosities. All this is folk-lore and nothing archaelogically provable or tested historically. Finally, the Buddhist version of the Rāma-Sītā story as found in the Dasaratha Jātaka is examined comparing it with the Rāmāyaṇa. |
