A typical attitude of some Hindus toward ecology or the environment may be epitomized by everyday expressions such as “Just my space needs to be clean.” and “Just in spirit needs to be pure.” What doctrines of Hinduism do this two-faced attitude originate from? This article aims at explaining with focus on Advaita Vedānta what metaphysical background or ideological origin the two-faced attitude of some Hindus toward ecology has. First of all, though Advaita Vedānta Ecology as a part of Hindu Ecology considered to be ‘Deep Ecology’ has similarities with Ecology of other schools and sects, It is necessary to be evaluated in its own right. In that case, monism of Advaita Vedānta may be more of a non-ecology rather than an eco-centric thought, as It features exclusivity of the world through the principle of self-salvation and the method of separating the world. Furthermore, advocating ‘two-tier metaphysics’ that discriminates reality from phenomenon and ‘two-dimensional metaphysics’ that distinguishes microcosm from macrocosm, ‘Spiritual Individualism’ of Advaita Vedānta leads the Hindu’s eco-consciousness in an individualistic and spiritualistic direction. From this, individualistic tendencies strengthen the exclusive concept of ‘just my space’ by retreating human life from the natural world of macrocosm, and spiritualistic tendencies strengthen that of ‘just in spirit’ by devaluating that natural world as the meaningless. Moreover, the logic of viewpoint and the inversion phenomena of actualities that appear in Advaita Vedānta could have had a negative impact on Hindu’s cognition of public actuality and concrete actuality about ecology. After all, it is assumed that the metaphysics of Advaita Vedānta may have had an influence to some extent on the two-faced eco-consciousness of some Hindus, which seems to be at a private and in the abstract high level, but at a public and in the concrete low level. |
