The objective of this paper is to examine literary transformation of Rākṣasī Trijaṭā in Rāma-kathā Tradition and the interrelationship between it and dharma. Rāma-kathā, which literally means Rāma’s story, is the phrase by which scholars refer to the basic narrative of Rāma’s marriage, exile, and battle with Rāvaṇa. The theme of Rāma-kathā is dharma which is a key concept with multiple meanings in Indian thoughts. The main plot of Rāma-kathā is Rāma’s victory over Rāvaṇa; in other words, the victory of dharma over adharma. There are several minor characters in Rāma-kathā; among them Trijaṭā is a rākṣasī on the side of dharma. In Vālmīki’s Rāmāyaṇa, Trijaṭā reprehended rākṣasīs who were threatening and frightening Sītā; she then proceeded to tell them about her dream foreshadowing the fall of Rāvaṇa and the triumph of Rāma, and made them apologize to Sītā. The other intervention of Trijaṭā takes place after the first major incident of the war. Sītā along with Trijaṭā had been sent by Rāvaṇa to view the battlefield, where Rāma lay helpless. At this sight, Sītā began to lament piteously, and Trijaṭā put heart into her assuring her that Rāma were alive. Rāma-kathā has been handed down over centuries, across regions, and among different communities, by different types of media. Several cultural/linguistic groups in India have shared this story which became a symbol of national unity and integration. Rāma-kathā has been told hundreds of times in diverse ways; its diverse set of tellings is called ‘Rāma-kathā tradition’. Trijaṭā’s characterization has been changed in later Rāma-kathās. She is generally depicted as Vibhisana’s daughter or sister. Her function and role have been enlarged; sometimes have replaced other characters’. Dharma is a strong machinery of this literary transformation of Trijaṭā. |
