Although fire had played an important role in the ancient cultures and religions of the Indo-European systems, the various roles given to Agni or fire in sacrifices during the ancient India are so unique like no other origin can be found. In ancient India, the concept of Agni had been changed from the fire for daily life of human to the sacrificial fire which was central to a sacrificial ritual. Because Agni (the sacrificial fire) transformed the sacrificial offering into a form accessible to the gods. And it was this offering to the gods which brought about the reciprocal divine gifts to the sacrificer. In relation to this matter, Agni was regarded not only as the sacrificial fire in the alter but also as the god of fire in heaven who accepts the sacrificial offering to himself. It means that Agni was acted as the mediator (or the messenger) between gods and human in ritual, since it is Agni who carried the oblations to the deities. From the role of the mediator, Agni not only a central concept of a sacrificial ritual but also as the most important concept of the cosmic cycle of transformations of a living Being(五火二道說) and Saṃskāra. Furthermore Agni was even identified with the fire in the body of the householder or the sacrificer during a ritual action. From this identity of Agni and inner fire of the sacrificer, it is also closely associated with Tapas or heat referring to extensive ascetic practices. This study aims to reveal he subdivided process and the symbolic meanings of the various roles of Agni in the sacrificial ritual, through the research into the previous works which are related to the role of Agni and the ritual literatures in ancient India. |
