This article examines the interesting similarities between the Bradley's interpretation on the Appearance and Reality and the pivotal model of the interpretation on the theory of the Three Natures in the Yogācāra philosophy. F. H. Bradley, the British Idealist, attempted to overcome the skeptical dead-end of the British Empiricism, adopting the ideas of the Absolute from the German Idealism. Bradley, however, stood firm on the proposition of the empiricism, "what is experienced is real." From this point of view, there is no place to acknowledge the existence of the Ding an sich that transcends the realm of perception. Instead, Bradley argues that the ultimate direct experience is the Absolute compared to the Absolute Geist of Hegel. For Bradley, appearance is not real but is something that should be overcome in the end. The process of sublation proceeds gradually by improving the degrees of truth, reflecting the truths of appearances to the Absolute, or the direct experience of the Reality. Such interpretation of Bradley seems to share the same line of thought with the idea of the Dependent Nature (paratantra svabhāva) that embraces both the Fabricated Nature (parikalpita svabhāva) and the Perfected Nature (pariniṣpanna-svabhāva), but by sublating the Fabricated Nature it reveals itself as the Perfected Nature, the ultimate reality. Bradley suggests that we are able to reach the ultimate reality when we directly experience the reality by gradually improving the degrees of truth and finally transcending the properties and relations in the world of appearance. |
