The Saṃkhya-Yoga system espouses dualism between consciousness and matter by postulating two "irreducible, innate and independent realities: Puruṣa and Prakṛti. While the Prakṛti is a single entity, the Saṃkhya-Yoga schools admit a plurality of the Puruṣas in this world. Unintelligent, unmanifest, uncaused, ever-active, imperceptible and eternal Prakṛti is alone the final source of the world of objects. The Puruṣa is considered as the conscious principle, a passive enjoyer(bhoktṛ) and the Prakṛti is the enjoyed (bhogya). Saṃkhya-Yoga believes that the Puruṣa cannot be regarded as the source of inanimate world, because an intelligent principle cannot transform itself into the unconscious world. This metaphysics is a pluralistic spiritualism, a form of realism built on the foundation of dualism. Puruṣa, the eternal pure consciousness, due to ignorance, identifies itself with products of Prakṛti such as intellect(buddhi) and ego(ahaṃkāra). This results in endless transmigration and suffering. However, once the realization arises that Puruṣa is distinct from Prakṛti, the Self is no longer subject to transmigration and absolute freedom (kaivalya) arises. Double reflection which occurs in Puruṣa is reflections of selection. In any cognition, there is a first cognitive apprehension which requires a difference between knower and known in the terminology of Saṃkhya-Yoga which is provided by double reflection theory in the Yoga Vartika of Vijñānabhikṣu. This double reflection theory attempts to account for the subjectivity of cognitive knowledge and also for the justification of the cognitive knowledge of the known object.
