Both of the Eastern and Western monks were followed the strict rules on the course of initiation, the place for practise, and food to survive. Those were important means of accomplishing the liberation and salvation of monks, who lived a life of self-control during the depart of the secular world. For example, Indian monks, who sought a life of Ahiṃsā(no destruction of life), Pratyāhāra(control of the senses), and Tapas(penance), were the mendicant with livelihoods. They went out every morning for alms, carrying vessel the for food which was cooked by the others. And they had to eat them by noon. Commonly they followed the rule of alms, prohibitions of certain food, and fasting. On the other hand, Christian monachus, who vowed of three virtues(poverty, chastity, and obedience), lived as a community and settlement in the monastery. They took turns in serving in the kitchen, and someone who were in duty cooked and served for others. They had a meal together in the dining room at a specified time. Commonly to the Eastern and Western monks, the act of eating and drinking was not just filling hunger or enjoying the taste. It was an important means of religious practises through self-denial and self-control. Therefore, it was forbidden to them to be obsessed of enjoying the flavor or to overeat the food. However, there were some differences in such as the character of the food which was allowed or forbidden, the way in which it was prepared, the meal times for a day, or the attitude of eating by following the specific rule of the food. It was caused by the differences in the way of religious practice and differences in time and region of monks. Therefore, a study on the rule of food may be the key to understand the life style and the way of religious practise of a specific group of monks. In such perspective, I will try to get an overview of the similarities and differences in the rule of food between Pāśupata and Christian monachus, who worked in a similar time in the East and West.
