The Kena Upaniṣad is the ninth chapter of the Talavakāra Brāhmaṇa, which is affiliated with the Sāmaveda. Thus it is also identified as the Brāhmaṇa Upaniṣad or Talavakāra Upaniṣad. The subject matter of the Kena Upaniṣad is comprehension of the Brahman, as well as the difficulties and processes of comprehending the Brahman. According to the commentary of Śaṁkara, the Brahman of the Kena Upaniṣad is the source of all organs and the light that is the true form of cognition, which is methodically connected. As the Brahman does not have any seeds of pain, such as desire, it is also the largest, or bliss beyond everything. In order to know the Brahman, one needs to know that oneself is the Brahman; i.e. one needs to know through a pure heart that there is nothing disparate within the Brahman. Through such recognition of the Brahman, or the fact that knowing the Brahman is oneself, one is able to gain a condition of viewing all perceptions, and thus also substance of the gaze, which has nothing to save nor fear, consistency, the pure and clear true form, 'selfness(ātmatva)', condition without differentiation, and oneness are gained in all beings. The process of knowing such Brahman is through acts of meditating by gathering one’s body and organs and soul, 'quietude(upaśama)', or fire rites. Knowledge of the substance is only borne to the pure mind of a person who has been purified through such acts. Furthermore, the process of knowing the Brahman is instantaneous, similar to a flash of lightning, a glimpse of light that disappears from our daily lives that is covered with the darkness(avidyā) full of desire and conceit(ahaṁkāra). |
