| 摘要 | Introduction. This presentation is based on qualitative research conducted in one of Japan's oldest non-government residential treatment centres for recovering alcoholics. Danshu-dojo is a therapeutic community for men recovering from alcohol misuse in Wakayama prefecture. This presentation will discuss the treatment approach and key activities undertaken in Danshu-dojo, discussing this in relationship to the existing literature concerning therapeutic communities. Method. Ethnographic research in Danshu-dojo was conducted by both authors in 2013/14 and was combined with semi-structured interviews with residents of the centre. Result. Drawing on Buddhist approaches and philosophies, residents' activities in Danshu-dojo are centred around a daily routine that encourages individual to reflect on their inner spirit. Unlike therapeutic communities in America, England and Australia, there is very little therapeutic content that focuses on group work and talk. Rather, residents are required to experience sobriety in a shared community, contributing to daily chores and engaging in meaningful and altruistic activities. Silence is a key feature of treatment and similar to other Japanese psychotherapies the approach aims at behavior modification through inner experience. Conclusion. Understanding the varieties of approaches utilised by residential treatment centres is important in gaining cross-cultural perspectives of the treatment of substance misuse problems. |
