| 摘要 | This paper is an ethnographic examination of one ocassion for the performance of the Japanese tea ceremony, the public gathering, and in it I illustrate some of the continuum between theater and ritual in its performance. I propose that the ritual goals of a public tea gathering are the creation of a tea community with greater social density and a more focused initiation of novice practitioners. These two goals distinguish public gatherings from the exalted "high-tea," yet serve to support it. |
