| 摘要 | In this paper I frame the practice of Buddhist discipline as a form of performance. The rules (Vinaya) are usually discussed under the rubric of jurisprudence, but John Holt has brought up the aspect of them as performative as well. Using performance and ritual theory I examine the Gurudharmas, which are the principal guidelines of the bhikkhunis (nuns), as a way to invigorate and add to the study of the lives of early Buddhist women. The Buddhist Sangha is continually extolled as very egalitarian from its inception. However, the six Gurudharmas clearly show the subordination of the nuns to the monks. While, this is understandable in terms of its historical context, it also reflects a vision of Buddhism that in some ways has not changed. I examine the Gurudharmas to show how they constrain the nuns to perform a certain understanding of Buddhism and how that could possibly affect the future of the nuns' very existence. |
