| 摘要 | The literary circle that came to be known as the San Francisco Renaissance had as its core the poets and novelists of the so-called Beat Generation. They were literary as well as social rebels, many of whom promoted their own kind of Buddhism as an alternative to bourgeois American values. Jack Kerouac's fictionalized account of his encounters with this literary circle is contained in his novel The Dharma Bums. Here this work is subjected to analysis using insights from ritual studies, especially those of Victor Turner. Not only does the religious meaning of the novel become clear through the application of Turner's theories of communitas and pilgrimage as ritual, but the novel is seen as a whole to be structured as a series of rites of passage that alternately embrace and reject community. |
