산스끄리뜨 필사본의 오류 수정 유형과 서체 목록 : 울너 컬렉션의 15～17세기 종이 사본을 중심으로=The Script Table and the Types of Error Correction for Sanskrit Manuscripts: based on 15th-19th c. paper manuscripts of the Woolner Collection
국내에서 산스끄리뜨 사본과 관련된 연구는 시작 단계라 할 수 있지만 근래 울너 컬렉션의 9,000여 사본을 통해 국내의 학자들이 직접 사본을 검토할 수 있는 계기가 마련된 것은 고무적이다. 아직은 사본에 대한 현황파악, 촬영 등 기초적인 작업에 머물고 있지만 머지않아 국내의 학자들이 사본을 통해 원전의 에디션에 직접 참여하고 또 관련 문헌학적 성과물이 쏟아지기를 희망한다. 사본을 포함한 문헌학적 연구는 별도의 교육이 필요할 뿐만 아니라 심지어 사본에 접근하는 것조차 훈련과 경험을 필요로 한다. 사본을 다루는데 일차적으로 필요한 것은 무수한 정보를 담고 있는 폴리오에 기록된 기호와 문자를 판독하는 것이다. 본 목록은 울너 컬렉션의 여러 사본을 판독하기 위해 활용했던 자료를 문서화한 것이다. 사본 분석은 case by case일 수밖에 없지만 다종다양한 사본을 접할 기회가 흔치 않은 현실에서, <15～19세기에 필사된 200여 사본의 필사체>는 범위가 넓은 목록이므로 여타의 사본을 판독하는데 참조 자료가 되었으면 한다.
In contrast to the long-established tradition of philological studies in Europe, the study of Sanskrit manuscripts in Korea is still in an early stage. In this respect, the over 9,000 manuscripts of the Woolner collection have been made available for direct scrutiny by scholars in Korea is an encouraging step. Although basic tasks concerning these manuscripts, such as status identification and digitalization, have only been rudimentarily completed, it is hoped that scholars in Korea will be able to consult directly the editions of primary sources and thereby produce new philological results. However, philological studies -including the study of manuscripts- not only presupposes a special education, but extensive training and experience as well. What is needed primarily is a folio of the text containing unlimited information and the training to read and decipher signs. Such a list can be employed for personal use, regardless of one's specific academic speciality, to read variations and multiple copies of a manuscript. Analysis of manuscripts still necessarily occurs on a case by case basis. However, as the opportunities to access various manuscripts remains a rare occurrence, the “General List of Manuscripts Compiled Based Upon more than 200 manuscripts extant from the 15th to the 19th centuries”, which is a fairly broad catalogue, can be useful to read other reference material.
