달라이 라마의 저술 내용 수준은 대부분 평이하지만, 그 배경에는 철저한 교의 해석 및 논리학이 뒷받침한다. 불교인이 아니더라도 누구나 읽을 수 있도록 한 교양 분야이다. 불교가 생소한 서구 사회에 그의 저술이 많이 보급된 힘이다. 독일의 슈피겔지는 여론 조사를 통해 이 시대의 모범 인물(role model)로 꼽기도 했다. 국내에도 많은 종류의 책들이 번역되었다. 그의 법문 내용에서 자주 접하는 내용은 사성제의 설명과 이에 따른 전법 방식이다. 고(苦)의 현실을 설명하고 멸(滅)의 행복으로 안내하는 과정이다. 더불어 쫑카빠의 3단계를 적절히 응용하여 단계에 의한 가르침을 펼치며, 세계평화로 이끄는 논리적 전개를 보여준다. 폭력 등 갈등의 현실을 묘사하고 불교의 소개, 그리고 공존할 수 있는 길을 모색한다. 이는 망명자 신분인 그의 체험에서 우러나기도 하지만, 엄청난 수학 과정과 최고 과정의 토론까지 마친 배경을 가진다. 더불어 나란다대학으로부터 이어진 인도 후기대승불교 및 티벳불교의 역사적 기반을 동시에 담보한다. 그는 겔룩빠의 수학 과정은 물론 많은 논사들의 철학을 공부했다고 고백한다. 누구나 그의 저술을 읽을 수 있는 용이성이 있지만, 이면에는 인도 및 티벳의 불교와 전법 방식들을 포함한다. 따라서 그의 저술들 보이는 전법 방식에 대해 고찰할 필요성을 갖는다. 본 논고 역시 사성제 및 쫑카빠의 단계적 서술 방식을 참고하여 서술했다.
Level of contents of books of Dalai Lama is mostly common but in its background, it supported by thorough interpretation of doctrines and logic. They are the fields of culture anyone, who is not even a Buddhist, can read. It is power of reasons why his books are broadly distributed a lot in Western society where Buddhism is not familiar. A German Spiegel newspaper has selected him as a contemporary role model through survey of public opinion. In Korea, many kinds of his books were translated and published. Contents we often find in his books are explanation about The Four Noble Truths and its consequent campaign methods. It explains the reality of suffering and is a process leading us to happiness of the cessation of suffering is attainable. Moreover, he deploys teaching by stages through appropriate application of three stages of Tshong kha pa and it shows logical deployment leading to the world peace. He describes reality of conflicts such as violence and introduces the Buddhism and explores ways that we can co-exist. This comes from his experiences as a man in exile but also there is a background of enormous processes of learning and even completion of the highest courses of debates. Moreover, it also guarantees the late period of Mahayana Buddhism of India continued from Naranda University and historical foundation of Tibet concurrently. He confesses that he has studied the courses of education of dGe lugs pa as well as many philosophies of campaign theories.
