| 摘要 | There was no format for funeral ceremonies in ancient Japan. It is believed that jiali (家礼) was introduced to Japan in the fifteenth century, in mid-Muromachi period. Monks of the Gozan temples articulated the format of funeral ceremonies modeled on Zhu Xi's Jiali, (朱子家礼) which has been handed down till the present. The paper examines the steps for the funeral rituals to be carried out: critical illness, passing away, funeral procession, burial and the rituals to be observed after the soul of the dead is deposited in the mortuary tablet as described in Zhu Xi's Jiali. (朱子家礼) It also explains the form of the mortuary tablet. Why are funerals conducted in Confucianism? One of the aims is to perform filial piety and another is to worship its soul as an ancestor. The meaning of ceremonies is also found in our belief that we are not alone but exist in the line of life starting from our ancestor. What is most important in ancestral worship is to do one's best to be true by caring and respecting. |
