본고에서는 『유식이십론』의 대론자 문제를 본격적으로 제기하고, 그에 따라『유식이십론』의 연구사를 비판적으로 검토하며, 이에 기반한 대안적 독해를 제공한다. 『유식이십론』은 일인칭 화자와 논적이 일련의 가상적 대론을 벌이는 형식을 띠기에 논적의 정체성 문제는 『유식이십론』 연구의 불가결한 부분이라고 할수 있다. 그러나 다수의 선행 연구자들은 이 문제에 그다지 관심이 없었다. 소수의 예외 중에서 일부는 대론자를 ‘실재론자’ 정도로 안전하게만 이해한다. 한편다른 이들은 전통적인 주석들의 보고를 전달해줄 뿐이다. 그러나 이 2가지 접근법은 모두 일정한 한계를 보인다. 전자의 경우 주로 규정상의 엄밀함이 부족하다. 그리고 후자의 경우 주석자들이 제공하는 정보들이 상호 불일치한다는 점, 참조해야할 자료가 과다하거나 혹은 부재한다는 점, 주석자들의 설명 자체가 부정확하다는 점을 지적할 수 있다. 본고는 기존 연구에 대한 비판적 검토와 더불어 대론자 문제라는 새로운 틀을통해 우리에게 이미 익숙한 『유식이십론』이 어떻게 새롭게 읽힐 수 있는지를 제2송 부분과 제5송-제7송 부분을 시범사례로 하여 보인다. 본고의 독해가 옳다면, 제2송에서 논적이 제기하는 비판적 관점 및 개념적 장치는 다름 아닌 『아비달마구사론』으로 소급된다. 한편 제5송-제7송의 논적은 『아비달마대비바사론』 등에나타난 선행논의를 통해 재구성될 수 있으며, 나아가 그 재구성은 소거법을 통해지옥옥졸 등의 존재론적 위상을 유식성 명제에 부합하게끔 조정하는 철학적 기획에 철저히 복무하는 방향으로 이뤄지고 있다.
This paper sets up the opponent problem in the Viṁśkiā, criticizes the previous studies on it accordingly, and finally proffers an alternative reading. The Viṁśikā takes the form of a debate between a first-person speaker and her opponent, which makes the problem indispensable. But only few researchers have shown an interest in it. Some of the very few exceptions safely consider the adversary simply as a realist. Others merely deliver traditional understandings on the matter. However, both of these approaches show limitations. The former lacks precision of stipulation. The latter suffers from mutual inconsistency between the reports on the opponents by commentators, the excess or lack of references, and the very inaccuracy of traditional information. Hereupon, this paper, criticizing previous approaches, shows new aspects of the old Viṁśikā as seen through the lens of the opponent problem. One can trace the critical viewpoints and conceptual frameworks found within the second verse back to those found in, and only in, the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya. The ideas regarding the opponent found in verses 5-7 can be gathered from the earlier Abhidharmic discourses. The reorganization of these ideas in the Viṁśkiā is directed towards the adjustment of the ontological status of hell guardians (among others) according to the idealist perspective.
