As historic temples have a lot of relics, their history and the times can be examined from them. Eunhaesa Temple (銀海寺), the 10th district main temple of the Jogye Order, has 〈the Buddha Chanting and Paradise of Amitabha〉 produced in 1750, which vividly shows that the pure land books based on belief in the pure land of the time were published and Buddha-invocation societies were popular. And as there was Mukseo (墨書) related to belief in the pure land in total 22 Bangjes (防題) in the Buddhist painting, it reflects an attempt to spread practice of invoking the name of Amidabha Buddha (稱名念佛). For the establishment of Eunhaesa Temple, National Teacher Hyecheol (惠哲國師) first built it in 809 C.E. and called it Haeansa Temple and Monk Cheongyo (天敎) changed the name to the current temple name as he renovated it the 16th century of the Joseon Dynasty. Part of relics were lost due to two great fires in the 1st reign of Injong of Joseon (仁宗)(1545) and the 18th reign of Myeongjong of Joseon (明宗)(1563). At this time, 〈the Buddha Chanting and Paradise of Amitabha (念佛往生捷徑圖)〉 enshrined in Simgeomdang of Eunhaesa Temple (the 15th year of Geongryung, 1750) had been robbed more than 30 years ago and was returned in 2010 and has been possessed in Buddhist Museum in Eunhaesa Temple until now after being repaired. The Buddhist painting was valued and designated as Treasure No. 1857 in 2015. Eunhaesabon of the 18th century has become the abundant materials which can interpret Buddhist art through the contents of the Buddhist painting as it reflects the historical background called the renaissance period of the Joseon Dynasty. The Buddhist painting is an example (作例) of the earliest Yongseondo form in the pure land Buddhist paintings in the 18th century and is noticeable in that the utmost bliss (Three Armtabha Triad, the nine grades of ponds, and Yongseonjeobin) recorded in 『The Amitayurdhyana Sutra (觀無量壽經)』 was independently drawn on the canvas. The Gundo form (群圖形式) which encircles Three Armtabha Triad and the family members as the two-tiered composition (3 scenes) on the silk ground was settled in the Buddhist painting. People are powerfully built and good-natured, usually have round and wide and flat faces, and feature the well-built upper bodies, the sharp fleshy protuberance on the crown of the Buddha, and large jewel up near the crown of the head. Especially, Avalokitesvara (Buddhist Goddess of Mercy) was inherited and shown in the form of Avalokitesvara created in the late 19th century and the 20th century inclu |
