The language and human existence are interrelated tightly. Language carves the feelings, perceptions, thoughts, conceptions and desires of man. But language gives some existential illusions to man. The illusions of substance and permanent everlasting self are originated from language. These illusions are the fatal hindrances to emancipation. Buddha pointed the illusions of language exactly and showed the methods to acquire freedom from them. According Buddha the mental proliferations(papañca and papañcasaññāsaṅkhā) hide and distort the reality of existence, and attack life. This mental proliferations are based on language. So if we attach existential illusions of language, we must undergo sufferings. To emancipate from suffering, we have to be free from the existential illusions of language. To acquire freedom from the existential illusions of language, the school of Seon(禪宗) shows the way of practice by Wha-Doo(話頭). The school of Seon(禪宗), especially the Seon of seeing the Gong-An(公案), asserts that the doubt of the Wha-Doo(話頭 疑心/疑情) leads to the Sudden Enlightenment and Seeing Nature (頓悟見性). The beginning point of the Wha-Doo's doubt is the ‘Not knowing state of mind’. From this point two kinds of Not knowing state of mind are able to come into being. One is the ‘Not knowing mind which wants to know’, the other is the ‘Only not knowing mind’. The Wha-Doo's doubt is the ‘Only not knowing mind’. Not knowing mind which wants to know always aims at discriminating knowledge. Thus the man who practices with this kind of doubt necessarily falls the various kinds of illusions of language. But the Wha-Doo's doubt must necessarily lead to the Sudden Enlightenment and Seeing Reality which manifests the Not dividing mind(無分別知) freed from illusions of language. So the Wha-Doo's doubt must not be the kind of ‘Not knowing mind which wants to know’, but the ‘Only not knowing mind which never desires any kinds of prescribing answer’. The doubt of Wha-Doo has the aspect of non-prescription. We have to pay attention to this aspect of non-prescription to understand the causal interrelation between the doubt of the Wha-Doo and the Sudden Enlightenment and Seeing Reality. The 'Only not knowing mind which never desires any kinds of prescribing answer' is the state of mind denying the conceptual prescription voluntarily. The seeker of the Sudden Enlightenment and Seeing Reality is to take the aspect of voluntarily non-prescribing state of mind in Wha-Doo and concentrate on it. Thus can be freed freedom from the existential illusions of language and acquire the Sudden Enlightenment and Seeing Reality. |
