| 摘要 | A Brief History of the Amarapura Nikāya: Venerable Ambagahapiṭiye Ñāṇawimala’s Efforts to Establish the Upasampadā in Ceylon discusses the history of Buddhist fraternities in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the early history of Buddhism in Ceylon, Upasampadā [higher ordination] had become extinct and been re-established several times. In the late 1600s, Venerable Saraṇaṅkara Sāmaṇera made three attempts to revive the Upasampadā with support from the Ceylonese royalty; only one of these missions was successful, resulting in the establishment of the Siyam Nikāya. In 1764, King Kīrti Śrī Rājasinghe gave an edict that only monks from the Govigama caste could receive full ordination. Venerable Ambagahapiṭiye Ñāṇawimala Sāmaṇera was refused Upasampadā because he was in the wrong caste. In 1798, with financial support from wealthy businessmen, he undertook a mission to Siam to receive the Upasampadā with other novice monks and a team of lay persons. Once the journey was underway the wind failed, leaving the ship stranded. After Venerable Ambagahapiṭiye Ñāṇawimala Sāmaṇera correctly predicted when the winds would resume, the Dutch captain suggested going to Burma instead, and arranged for the monks to receive support from the emperor of Burma. Venerable Ambagahapiṭiye Ñāṇawimala Sāmaṇera and the other novices studied under the Saṅgharāja in Burma for two years, after which they were granted full ordination in 1801. With their return to Ceylon and the establishment of the Amarapura Nikāya in 1803, the Upasampadā became available to all monks in Ceylon regardless of caste, which encouraged the laity to enter this order and helped Buddhism to flourish to this day. |
