Generally speaking, Buddhism has a negative attitude toward language, but in fact, language, especially metaphor has been widely used in Buddhism. Metaphor is the most effective to reduce our sufferings (duhkha) because metaphor works in a cognitive and emotional way which is the cause of our sufferings. There are many stories in Buddhist scriptures and zen writings which show how metaphor works for attaining the Awakening and the liberation from psychological sufferings. It is not know until recently in western philosophy and linguistics that metaphor is not a rhetorical device but the essential in language and the core mechanism of thinking and behavior. According to cognitive linguistics, most of our ordinary conceptual system is metaphorical in its nature, therefore an analysis of an unconscious metaphorical system will give insights on cognitive and emotional dimension of self-understanding. Metaphor also has been used in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to analyze the unconsciousness or to solve the problems in the unconsciousness. In this paper, I analyzed two examples to show how a metaphor was used as a method of the Buddhist edification and practice. The story of Kata Gotami, which is considered as an archetype of Buddhist psychotherapy, is an excellent example how metaphor served to attain the Awakening and the liberation from sufferings. In this story, a handful of mustard seeds is a metaphor of a medicine for her dead baby. She could not get a handful of mustard seeds from the house where nobody had been dead. Instead of giving a direct solution or teaching for her, the Buddha left the problem open and let her to solve it by herself. Buddhist psychotherapy prefers to let people to solve problems by themselves rather than to give the solutions directly, because an indirect method works on the unconscious state of mind. In conclusion, metaphor, as an original method of Buddhist psychotherapy, works as efficiently as meditation to relief our sufferings. |
